Are You Interested in Rockets?
Perhaps many of you might think, "I have no interest in rockets." In Japan, space development often evokes an image of something reserved for experts or space enthusiasts. And it might seem like Japanese rockets are only used for limited purposes, such as weather forecasting.
However, if we take a closer look, the space business holds immense potential. According to Morgan Stanley, the global space market is projected to grow to approximately $1 trillion (around 150 trillion yen) by 2040—about three times its size in 2020. Meanwhile, in 2023, Japan launched rockets only twice. In contrast, there were 212 successful launches worldwide that year, with SpaceX alone accounting for 98 of them. Astonishingly, SpaceX launched rockets 105 times in the first 10 months of 2024—an average of one launch every three days.
One of the most notable aspects of this industry is the cost of satellites. Japan’s current flagship rocket, the H2A, costs about 10 billion yen per launch, while the new H3 rocket aims to reduce this cost to around 5 billion yen per launch. However, the cost per satellite carried by these rockets is estimated to range from 2.5 billion to 10 billion yen. In comparison, SpaceX’s cost per satellite is an astonishingly low 37.5 million yen, with over 6,000 satellites already operational and generating value. This means SpaceX's cost performance is 133 times better. Such a gap stems not only from differences in technology but also from disparities in how well each entity perceives and adapts to the times.
Now, let’s consider Japan’s current situation. In areas like rocket development, AI innovation, and the foundational technologies that support them, Japan is falling significantly behind other nations. AI, in particular, is a transformative force that affects all facets of business. Lagging in this field could result in profound, far-reaching consequences for the future.
So, what can we do? The answer lies in "genuine learning." Understanding the times accurately and cultivating the ability to think deeply from first principles are the keys to unlocking the future.

"Genuine learning" is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about gaining the power to foresee the future. For instance, we anticipated the challenges of global warming over 16 years ago and made EV charging outlets a standard feature in our housing designs. Such foresight is what will be required in these uncertain times to ensure survival and create value.
